Physiotherapy in Stittsville Without a Referral: What It Costs and What to Expect

September 13, 20266 min read

You do not need a doctor's referral to see a physiotherapist in Ontario. You can book online today, walk in on Thursday, and leave with a plan. Here is what that costs at Between The Bumpers in Stittsville, what actually happens in the first hour, and how to know whether physio is the right first step.

No referral. That surprises people.

Physiotherapists in Ontario are primary-contact practitioners, which means you can book directly, no family doctor visit first. Plenty of people in Stittsville and Kanata wait weeks for a doctor's appointment to "get a referral" that was never required. If your back has been bugging you since the spring, or your knee complains on the stairs at the barn door, you can book a physiotherapy assessment right now and be seen this week.

The one thing a referral still matters for is some benefit plans, which occasionally ask for one before they reimburse. That is between you and your plan, and it never stops you from being treated.

The short versionBook online, no referral, first visit is 60 minutes and costs $150 with no HST. You leave with a diagnosis in plain language and a plan with an end date.

What it costs in Stittsville

Physiotherapy is a regulated health profession in Ontario, so there is no HST on physio rates. Here is the full card, nothing hidden.

AppointmentCost
Initial assessment, 60 minutes
History, movement testing, hands-on assessment, treatment starts the same visit
$150
Follow-up treatment, 30 minutes$105
Follow-up treatment, 45 minutes$120
Follow-up treatment, 60 minutes$150

Most people book the 60-minute assessment first and let Megan recommend the follow-up length. For a straightforward issue that is often two or three 30-minute visits plus a home program. For post-surgical rehab or something that has been building for years, longer visits and a longer runway make more sense, and you will hear that honestly at the end of the first hour.

Every visit comes with a receipt. Plans differ, so check your own coverage rather than taking anyone's word for it.

What happens in the first 60 minutes

  1. You talk, she listens (about 15 minutes)When it started, what makes it worse, what you have already tried, what you want to get back to. Bring imaging reports or surgical notes if you have them; if not, that is fine.
  2. Movement testing (about 15 minutes)Bending, squatting, reaching, single-leg balance, plus hands-on testing of the joint or the area that hurts. Wear clothes you can move in. If it is a knee or hip, shorts help.
  3. Treatment starts the same visit (about 20 minutes)Hands-on work, mobility work, or the first two or three exercises, depending on what the testing showed. You do not leave with only a piece of paper.
  4. The plan (about 10 minutes)What is going on in plain language, what we are going to do about it, how many visits she expects, and a short home program for the days in between. If athletic therapy or coaching is the better fit, she says so and we move you.

Why a physio inside a gym is different

Most physiotherapy clinics stop when the pain stops. You get discharged, you go home, and six months later the same thing flares because the strength that would have protected it was never built. At Between The Bumpers the physiotherapist and the coaches work in the same building. When Megan clears you, she can walk you to a coach who already knows what she found, and the rebuild carries on with the same information.

It also works the other way. If you are training here and something starts to hurt, the assessment is twenty feet away, the coach adjusts your program that week, and nobody has to guess.

What we treat most in Stittsville

The list is long, but the people who walk through the door most often are dealing with one of these:

  • Persistent back and neck pain, the kind that has been "fine, mostly" for six months.
  • Knee, hip and shoulder pain, including arthritis, and keeping the joint moving and strong.
  • After surgery: joint replacements, repairs, and getting full range and confidence back.
  • Sprains, strains and tendon pain that turned chronic because they were ignored.
  • Balance and confidence: steadier on stairs, on ice, and getting up off the floor.
  • Returning after years away: sore, stiff, and not sure where to start. That is a normal first appointment here.

Physiotherapy or athletic therapy?

Both are here. Physiotherapy has the broader scope: chronic pain, post-surgical rehab, neurological conditions, and long layoffs from activity. Athletic therapy, with Taylor Baird, CAT(C), focuses on muscle, joint and tendon injuries and getting active people back to their sport or their life. If you hurt it doing something and want to get back to that something, start with Taylor. If it has hurt for months, you have had surgery, or you have not trained in years, start with Megan. Book the wrong one and we simply move you.

Common questions

Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist in Ontario?

No. Physiotherapists are primary-contact practitioners in Ontario. You can book directly. Some benefit plans ask for a referral before reimbursing, so check yours if that matters to you.

How much is physiotherapy in Stittsville?

At Between The Bumpers the initial 60-minute assessment is $150. Follow-ups are $105, $120 or $150 for 30, 45 or 60 minutes. Physiotherapy is HST exempt.

How many visits will I need?

Honestly, it depends on what the assessment finds, and Megan will tell you at the end of the first visit. The goal is a plan with an end, not open-ended weekly appointments.

What should I wear?

Clothes you can move in. Shorts help for a knee or hip. Coming straight from work is fine; there is somewhere to change.
