What Is Your Why For Exercise

What Are Your 5 Whys

What is important to you?

I want you to take a moment to really stop and think.

  • What are the most important parts of your life?

  • Who is the type of person that you want to be?

  • Where do you want to be, 3,5,10 years from now, if you got your act together.

The values, and habits of the person above, are you living those values on a regular basis?

Your overall health is predicated on so much more than just 1 domain; That is why here at BTB we work to develop well rounded training programs for you. Health goes beyond the doors of the gym however. Wellness is based on your relationships, your health & fitness, personal development, financial stability, family, recreation & relationships, community & contribution, and growth and education.

When you find that any one of these buckets are empty, your overall health will be impacted.

We cannot get around this interconnected nature of our health.

When we know what is important to us, we will have meaning and purpose in our lives.

When we know what is important to us, we are more likely to act in a way that fills all of these buckets.

The degree to which we align our actions to fill all these buckets, greatly impacts our health.

Having a strong set of guiding principles in life, will make you healthier and live longer. A life void of purpose, meaning, and values is a recipe for ill health.

Does what you do line up with your values?

The 5-Whys exercise borrowed from our nutrition program is a powerful tool, that helps us to uncover our deepest values and motivations. Here is an example of how asking why 5 times works:

For example,

“I want to lose weight.”

  1. Why do I want to get fit?

    • Because I want to fit into smaller clothing.

  2. But why do I want to fit into smaller clothing?

    • Because when I’m wearing smaller clothes, I think I’ll look better.

  3. But why do I want to look better?

    • Because when I look good, I feel better about myself.

  4. But why do I want to feel better about myself?

    • Because when I feel good about the way I look, I’m more confident and in control.

  5. But why do I want to be more confident and in control?

    • Because when I’m more confident and in control, I‘m better able to live the life I want to on my own terms.

Okay, we just got real deep, in just 5 steps.

For this athlete, losing weight was really about taking control of their life, and living on their own terms.

That is critical insight into oneself.

They were not just looking to fit into smaller clothing, or to drop the number on the scale.

They wanted to feel more confident and in control of their life. That is what is what they really value, and what they are really after. That is what their motivation will be when they run into the difficult obstacles in life. And there will be those difficulties.

“Getting fit, and fitting into smaller clothing” is still important, and it's a short term milestone on a deeper journey. And a great tool to measure success on the way to more confidence and control in their life.

So let's see if we can work through the 5 whys for ourselves now:

Why Are You Training At BTB?

Pause. Take a moment, and really be honest with yourself.

  • What is really important to you?

  • What is your goal for the end of your first year at BTB? What kind of person do you want to become?

  • How do you want to feel?

After taking a few minutes to write this down. You should be in the right frame of mind. Alright now let's go deeper.

What Are Your 5 Whys?

Now use that notepad, word doc, or whatever writing tool suits you:

Question 1: Why are you training at BTB?

Question 2: Why is that reason important?

Question 3: And why is that important?

Question 4: And what difference will that make?

Question 5: And why will the previous answer matter?

Now place this somewhere you will see it, to remind yourself. When the times get tough… and they will, why you’re doing this.
