Pain While Lifting? Here’s When to Push Through — And When to Book a Physio Session

May 14, 20252 min read

Is It Pain or Just Muscle Soreness?

If you lift regularly, you’re probably no stranger to a little discomfort. A solid training session will leave you feeling the kind of soreness that says, “I worked hard today.” But what happens when that twinge in your shoulder or your lower back starts showing up mid-lift — or worse, lingers for days?

This is where understanding your pain becomes critical.

When It’s Okay to Push Through

Not all discomfort is bad. In fact, in some cases, it’s part of the strength-building process.

Mild muscle soreness (DOMS) 24–48 hours after training
Fatigue or slight burn near the end of a set
General stiffness after increasing intensity or volume

These are all normal — and often expected — responses to progressive training.

Red Flags: When to Stop and Seek Help

If you’re experiencing any of the following, it’s time to hit pause and consult a physiotherapist:

🚩 Sharp, stabbing, or sudden pain during a lift
🚩 Pain that lingers more than 72 hours or worsens with movement
🚩 Pain that changes how you move or causes compensation
🚩 Pain radiating down the leg, arm, or into joints (back, shoulder, knee, etc.)
🚩 Recurring pain in the same area with no clear cause

Pushing through these can lead to more serious issues — including tendonitis, joint instability, and chronic injury.

Why Lifting with Pain Can Do More Harm Than Good

Training through pain isn’t a badge of honor — it’s often a fast track to time off. And for active professionals, parents, and athletes, that lost time can mean:

  • Reduced strength and progress

  • Missed work or events

  • Frustration and setbacks

By booking a session with a physiotherapist trained in strength-based rehab, you can often catch issues early — and keep training through a modified, intentional plan.

What Happens in a Physio Session at BTB

At Between The Bumpers in Stittsville, our physiotherapy team works directly inside the gym environment. That means your treatment isn’t limited to a clinic table — it often includes:

  • A full mobility assessment

  • Strength and movement testing under load

  • Personalized modifications to your current program

  • Hands-on treatment when needed

  • A clear path to keep training safely

Whether you're dealing with shoulder pain from overhead pressing, lower back tightness from deadlifts, or knee discomfort during squats, we tailor your care to your actual movements.

The Bottom Line: Don’t Ignore It

Pain is information. Ignoring it or numbing it with Advil doesn’t fix the root cause.

If you’re unsure whether it’s “just soreness” or something more — don’t guess. Let our Stittsville physiotherapy team help you figure it out.
